Threads threads threads I love them .......
All types of fibres, weights and colours.
But I do like to stay organised when ever I can. I find it saves me time in the long run.

I keep all threads divided firstly into type then colour for example cotton 50 weight all together in draws in colour themes.

These draw systems I bought from one of those variety discount shops mine is in Miranda fair Sydney, but they are everywhere. Keeping the dust and light out of the thread is a good thing. Keeps them new and clean ready for use at any time.

In my sewing area I keep a draw full of common threads I like to use again and again right behind me , turn around and they are there. I keep stationary in one draw, marking tools in another ,machine tools in another, sewing machine needles in a draw and cutting tools in the last. Everything has a place and there when I need it.

New projects also have a washing basket with all the design notes, drawings, sketches, fabric, threads , everything I need for that project so I don't have to hunt down for the correct tools. All in one place .

This is a new quilt project some of my teaching quilts are looking sad and old and I would like to up date them .

Some of this fabric I bought last year from Amitie in Melbourne . Jenny has THE best taste when buying fabric for her shop.

I had a few requests lately to see detail of some of my qulting.
Im never sure if any one is out there reading this so I enjoy feed back .

Ill try and write more and share more.....
The first photo is a new class this year Coloured flowers , leaves and feathers .
The flowers and free motion quilted in black cotton thread with white background filler of echoing and shells, a pattern I love to quilt it flows so pretty around the soft shapes.
This class is running at AQC in Melbourne in April,This and That patchwork in Brisbane Queensland in March , Blueberries at Wyong in July, Hobby Sew kings Park in September., and Taupo NZ in 2013.

Also a new class A day of background fillers . If you have been Free motion quilting and want more inspiration and patterns this one is a great class. Ran it in Melbourne for the first time last week and it was recieved fantastically. Available in AQC Melbourne April, Blueberries in May, Addicted to fabric Canberra June .

Pakenham sucess

First trip away was to sewing Connection in Pakenham Melboure.
I just wanted to share with you a great student success story.
Karen Semple from Pakenham has the last couple of my visits has been an active class participant. Karen shared with me and the class some quilts she has been making for her family and quilted them all herself.

How cool is this block cats tails intertwined... Love it and the pebbles in the background quilting are beautiful ....

Karen's quilt was ditched first then she added texture inside blocks and detail to the blocks as below continuous curves inside the 1/2 square triangles.

And tear drops in the border.

Congratulations Karen it looks sensational keep up the great work.

Its wonderful to see my students actually get in and apply the practical techniques I have shown them on to their own work. I love it .......

Well back to work.

A busy and fantastic year ahead for me

Just wanted to share with you that in 2 weeks I will be filming my 3rd DVD for Quilters Companion Magazine. I will be demonstrating some of the articles I have written over the last few years . I am a visual learner like many quilters we love to see it. Ill let you know how it goes. Its always a scray thing to do !!!!!!

I have just yesterday completed my Spring floral applique top. Yee Haa Many months worth of work and I am so very happy with it. 20 blocks with 4 elaborate applique borders, now all I have to do it quilt it. And to me thats the fun bit.........

This is just one block that I have designed for the quilt it is all machine blanket stitched.

I cant wait to come back to class at Pegs Pieces Kirrawee to see what wonderful work the girls have done for their last blocks.

I am staring this quilt again this year 2012 at pegs Pieces kirrawee, Hobby Sew kings Park and Blueberries wyong.

Sue Williams has done numerous workshops with me and it was such a wonderful surprise to see her own version of my Daisy Paths Quilt. Sue has always been a pleasure to have in class, and applies BEAUTIFULLY what she learns into her own quilts . I love the way you have changed some of the applique and gave it your own design stamp on your stunning quilt . All pieced , appliqued and quilted By Sue .... Wow what a year its been full of great classes and wonderful locations
A huge thank you to all the shops , and groups that I have visited this year and see you all again soon.

My last few classes were in Tasmania and where I taught for Robyn Miller at " Sew Knit in Launceston
We had our workshop at a large bowling club where 20 ethusiastic students has 2 great days free motion quilting. Thanks ladies I really enjoyed meeting you and Il see some of you at the Tasmanian Quilters Guild workshop in 27th June to 2nd July. There Im doing two sets of 3 day Master Classes in free motion quilting....... Robyn has booked December 3rd-6th 2012 for me to visit again so watch her calender for more information.

The event was run so smoothly and we had a lovely evening meal out.
Thanks Ladies and Robyn and see you all next year.

Then on to St Helens where Anne and the Break O Day Stitchers and Bichino Girls .
4 days of Machine applique and some wonderful results.

FAREWELL THE PATCHWORK HEART

I taught my last class at The Patchwork Heart( Penrith NSW) today. Very sad indeed.

Michelle Marvick and her sister Kim Harris are calling it a day after nearly 10 years of having one of Sydney's best patchwork shops.

I walked into Michelle shop 9 years ago and told her my name and that I teach Domestic Machine quilting and Michelle did not hesitate to invite me into her shop and an instant friendship, mutual respect and love of quilting grew very quickly.

Michelle had a wonderful shop that was 95 % machine piecing, she taught a lot of classes with numerous new skills and ideas. Every time I walked into the shop for a class there was another stunning quilt on the wall. She constantly fed her students with new techniques and challenges. So they all had to learn to quilt their own tops and then I was called in .

Every class was a pleasure , Michelle encouraged me to develop my own skills, both in teaching and techniques and was always happy to introduce another level of my classes to her very busy timetable.

The industry has lost a wonderful shop where great skills could be learnt.

Thank you Michelle and Kim for your kindness, friendship and professionalism .
Thanks for the endless cups of tea and a great listening ear.

I will miss you both.

New sewing room....

Just thought I would share with you my new room set up for my quilting.

You see I said to John ( My hubby) I need a studio.... everyone has a studio excepot me !!!!! well I went on and on about buying a new home so I could have the elusive studio.....

John went along with all of this looking at homes in the area and nothing was right, homes we looked at were too small, too big, too much work to do , too much pebble creating, too dark, no sun , the list goes on ........

He said to me one day hey why do we need a formal lounge room we dont use it much and the dining room?
Why dont you move into the front lounge room, well it was like a light globe going off ( we have only been in the house 24 years) funny how you can change the way you look at things isant it .....
'

So over one day we moved me out of the tiny dark 4th bedroon into the front of the house , great sun , light, lovey outlook and Im happy as Larry now .... John wipped his forhead.... Thank goodness we dont have to move now....

Well ,Im still looking for THE right one ( dont tell him) but in the mean time I have so much light and space , Im so happy in my own big room .

The table john took the top off a old desk , bought a sheet of ply wood 4 foot by 8 foot attached this to the desk, cut out the shape of my 440 Bernina and made a box for it to sit in ... Perfect ... Flat surface to quilt
I design , iron and cut the one side and then swap over to the over side to sew on the machine.

I have a tall ikea draw system with fabrics a portable design wall to the side and cupboard space behind the machine. I threw out all the junk that we collect over the years and now feel very comfortable in my new space.

On my machine I have my Bernina multi spool holder , my koala chair and my great big light..
A tv , dvd and radio all essential for a big day on the machine.
Off to Tasmania in a few days teaching at SEW KNIT in Launceston and at St Helens for Break _o- Day stitchers , looking forward to seeing my quilting Tassy friends again.

I just wanted to share with you, A quick photo and hello, I taught my last once a month class at Hobby Sew Ryde and Wendy started machine quilting her very first quilt. Look at the smile. I am very happy for Wendy starting her journey. I really enjoyed getting to know the girls and everyone was a delight to teach.The quilt is from my Blanket and decorative stitch applique class and Wendy has done a beautiful job. The quilt when finished will be for one of wendys daughters .

Maclean Visit

Just returned home from 5 days teaching in Maclean NSW. Very beautiful part of the NSW northern district. This is one stunning home from the area. Thank you Elizabeth and Mary for all of the organising. The classes went so smoothly and it was a pleasure to teach such lovely ladies , so keen to learn new teachniques and to think a little bit different to the way they had always quilted
So glad everyone had a great learning experience.
This was all possible because of the Quilters Guild of NSW Country Tutors agreement.
The guild assists the group financially with the tutors travel costs .

Beautiful home I just love agapantha time.

Something The guild should be very proud of. We had a great few days .

I just want a quick post to let those students whom I have let down , please know how sorry I am to have had to cancelled some classes at the moment. I have a severe viral chest infection and need lots of bed rest. Im not a good patient Im very upset and dissapointed to be ill but I just have to relax and I will make up the classes in 2012. Floral garden Applique

Well this second half of the year at Pegs Pieces at Kirrawee I have been teaching a wonderful group of ladies my new applique quilt 'A Floral Garden ". This is the second year we have been together and I needed to have a long term project for them ,so I started with the rose of sharon flower and worked in some tradional blocks and some of my original blocks and came up with a 16 block quilt. It didnt look right so 4 more blocks I designed and presto 20 blocks , then for the borders they are 4 very detailed applique vines going around the quilt. Mine is on black and some of the girls are also on black , some navy, mint and white . It is very rewarding to watch this process of the girls working through the blocks , sometimes very much out of their comfort colour zone, but ALL of them are delighted and enjoying the quilt so much.

This makes me very happy , you see Im usually a techniques teacher,I teacher them then leave on to the next group and to be a part of a whole quilt with them has been very rewarding for me. I have loved it so much. We will continue next year as they have agreed to finish off the 20 blocks for Feb 2012 and then we will go on to layout of the blocks , some will setthem in , some will sash, and then to the borders . These are alot of work but I love the look really rich and delicious looking quilt. We will then go about quilting the quilts also in class in 2012.

Wendy is a busy GP , mum of 3 and new quilter and here is her freshly completed machine appliqued and pieced top ready for her to start machine quilting next time we meet in November at Hobby Sew North Ryde . I have been doing a once of month class there , where in the morning we do machine techniques and in the afternnon free motion quilting. Just back from a delightful 2 days workshop at Berry Patchwork with Lizzy and 9 lovely ladies.
The girls were really fun and a delight to teach. We had a great night out at the Berry Pub and home to Liz's where I met her gang of 4 dogs( really enjoyed the cuddles) , 2 cats, 2 chickens , 1 goose, 1 donkey and a peacock next door. Beautiful peaceful rural surrounding , so quiet and green. Thank you everyone for making my last 2 days such a pleasure and for travelling so far .

A DAY OF BACKGROUND FILLERS for those wanting more inspiration for thier quilts this is a good intensive class full of practical ideas

SPRING FLORAL APPLIQUE this is a once a month machine applique long term project that is 20 blocks and 4 applique borders, I am very proud of this project it is a huge amount of work but has stunning results we will quilt this project after completion of all piecing and applique, Students have the flexability to piece this in any formation they like I encourage students to be creative and experiment.

I turned 50 last month.... I have to say I struggled with this birthday a little.
50 sounds serious!!!!!
I should know what Im doing by now shouldnt I?

Well I did survive and was totally spoilt . John surprised me with a beautiful night at the 4 seasons at The Rocks this was the view from our room, I LOVE SYDNEY and a great party a few days later and danced till 4 am ( still got it)

50 and still smiling!!!!!

new applique classes for 2011

I have decided to break up the machine applique class and do 2 by one day classes for 2011

First one class is Blanket stitching and decorative stitches.We never use the decorative stitching usually and they are so Beautiful. Ive had fun changing width and length of some to come up with great combinations
Students will be well on their way to making this cute hearts and lollipops single bed quilt.Full pattern given in class.

Second class is Free motion applique and blind hem stiching. Blind hem is so great it looks like needle turn withut all the hundreds of hoursof stitching by hand. Free motion applique is creative and loose and fun. Quilt under construction now but here is a sneek preview.

Pegs Achievements

I have been teaching a new style of class all this year at Pegs Pieces in Kirrawee (which is 5 mins from home ) in the morning we do a machine technique either applique or quilting thier own quilts etc and in the afternoon we do one new pattern of free motion quilting. This gives the girls a month to practice this pattern/s and to take their time and really feel comfortable.
I have enjoyed this so much, to get to know the ladies a little and to see thier progress.

So I would like to share some of their achievements with you

This is Kylie brand new to quilting and has quilted her very first quilt and done it BEAUTIFULLY. So flat and a great cable in the border.. Go Girl!!!!! One of many Im sure.

Melbourne Quilters Guild Visit

Just back from the weekend in Melbourne on the invite of the Quilters Guild of Victoria. I flew down saturady morning and was driven to Box Hill Town Hall. Beautiful building very grand indeed. I was welcomed by Fan Williams (President )and Mary (commitee) with hugs and wide smiles. This made me relax straight away.

Quick fix of the face and then off on stage to deliver my speech on " MY JOURNEY". I had 23 quilts with me starting from the very first quilt 20 years ago. Full of pleats puckers imperfections but as I said to the audience this is the start of an amazing journey.
I took them through my background of Dads factory, tafe and work life at Boowalla, then on to 3 quilts borrowed by Katrina Hadjimichael to represent the 500 that I have quilted over 5 or so years.
Showed the 18 teaching and show quilts right up to the very latest .
I had a great responce ... Thank you all so much I was quite aprehensive and scared thinking about it all before, but on the day I relaxed and actually enjoyed myself.
Fan Willians now EX president and partner John were wonderful hosts to a glass or 3 of wine and lovely dinner.
Next day off to the local masonic lodge and in the main meeting room had a free motion class. Very starnge teaching surrounded by all kinds of symbollic furniture , tiles , lights and the G hanging from the ceiling!!! That was a first. All students did really well and Ive made more new friends.

Creative By the Sea Retreat

Just back from teaching at Cretaive by the Sea at Coffs Harbour.
I didnt quite know what to expect as I have never taught there before and I was wonderfully surprised with the teaching space and the well organised event.
I was meet by Wendy Martin after a very rough flight on Wednesday late afternoon and quickly got to work arranging my class room.
Went to dinner and was meet by lovely new faces and some very firendly familair faces. Great to catch up with Linda and Sue from Fingal bay, and had lots of laughs as usual with Donna ( mother of the bride ) and Mary( has a new big boss) both of Canberra.
Ladies came from all over the country for the event.
Thursday morning and I meet my 16 students all eager and full of butterflies in their tummies, we soon got working and I am so thrilled with their results. Fantatic 3 days work girls, you quilted up a storm...... I am so proud of all of you.

I had the pleasure to meet and spend some time with the very talented Jane Sassaman from the USA, I adore her work, her students produced some stunning designs.She is such a talended quilt maker and designer.

Saturday 4 pm good bye time came so quickly and luckily a smooth flight home.

Parkes cold weather but warm hearts

It was my 4th year teaching at" VANESSA'S WOOL AND CRAFT" in Parkes.
Lovely to catch up with Vanessa and the girls.
Lynne , I was blown away with what you have produced over the last year. Congratulations!!!!

This quilt was the pattern from my first DVD with quilters companion magazine, Lynne has pieced and quilted this it looks great! Lynne is a full time nurse, busy grandmother and addicted quilter, she goes to vanessa most days to sew for a few hours before her afternoon shift starts.Theres commtiment to her art hey!!!! Lynne on the left and Vanessa on the right.

We always go for a lovely meal on one of the nights and friday night we went to Bella"s lovely meal and great company. Thanks ladies. Lovely to see students return to improve and develope their skills, I really enjoyed my time in Parkes. returning in July 2011............

Antique White for Claire

My daughter Claire picked out this antique quilt from one of my books and asked me if I would make it for her 18th birthday. Well of course I can........
IT made it a pleasure as I just adored the quilt myself.
Classic clean and elegant. The photo left alot of detail of the quilting out so I researched antique quilting patterns and set to work.
The back goround fabric is white on white tiny little flower print and the applique is fine blanket stitch done on the Bernina 820. I as always designed the whole quilt first on paper to scale then ste out to quilt the trapunto. That took a couple of days then sandwich the quilt with hundreds of pins, stabalize the quilt with walking foot foirst then a fine echo quilt around the applique to set off the design.
I micro stippled the backgound of the trapunto shapes and detailed quilted each of the plain blocks which tok about a day and half EACH!!!!!
Now the border micro stipple up to the feathers , and 1/2 inch cross hatched the outside edge of the borders. I threaded in each left over thread instead of anochoring the start and end as I only wanted each stitch to be the same perfect size. CRUMBS this too ages and ages!!!!!!
Anyway, binding went on and very carfully stitched down then had a really close look at it all. Wrong red spot fabric ...well done Deborah and I missed blanket stitching one of the flowers centre . OH well not changing it now!!!!!!!
These things make the quilt just like me silly at times.
Anyway its done Claire loves it and it won 3 rd professional catagory and Judges Choice special award..... Lovely 2 ribbons what a wonderful surprise....

It was such a wonderful day , meeting up with friends and students form all over the place.
Thanks to all the people who congratulated and comented that they loved my DVD this makes me feel so priveledged to be able to touch alot of people with my style of quilting .. Thank you I just LOVE being part of this wonderful industry.

Than you to all of the guild members whos organised such a wonderful show,,,, just a remeinder its a members show , become a member if you are not already a member and have a quilt hang next year its such a thrill!!!!

Thanks must go to the Blue Wren quilters for a lovely week in Wagga Wagga. I had a lovely time , great girls, so eager to learn, great location to teach at so comfy and great hospitality.

AQC WHAT A BLAST!!!!!!!!

ACQ 2010
Just home from a fantasic time at AQC.

I had 4 days teaching , 20 students in a class and everyone was delightful. There's something in the air at AQC , that is so special. The venue was stunning.The deligates and tutors so happy to be there. Started with a cocktail party on the Wednesday evening a only 2 glasses of champagne ( had to be good) and off to dinner with some of the tutors.
First 2 days was " yes you can free motion quilt " and YES now they can !!!!! What a wonderful group of 20 ladies I had. They didnt get fazed at all when I had a white board problem and my Angel worked miracles and got one that worked. They started out hesitant and by friday 5 pm quilting like professionals....I had the best time Thank you girls you were sensational. I loved every minute of it.

Friday evening off to dinner with Lisa Walton and my roomie Julie Haddrick tutor from Adelaide and some of the American tutors. So cool be be with them and chat about the American teaching way of life. They Loved Melbourne. Saturdays class " free motion quilting with Stencils" was a oooh ahhh great time . Saturday night on goes the good black dress and off to the cocktail party. Greg Alexander Bernina Australia G.M. was part of the entertainment and the group Mamma Mia got everyone up dancing the night away. Thanks Sue and Sandy from Sewing Connection for a great night also. Had lots of dances with wonderful people. Fantasic night.

Sunday was the last day of class resulting in some stunning textures, free form and formal feathers. Well done. Cuddles and tears at the end of the class touched me so very dearly, makes all the hard work dissolve.

Thanks to Expertise Events the show was fabalous, food fab, accomodation fab.

Had a lovely few days at Amitie in Melbourne teaching.

This is Elizabeth with me at Cottage quiltworks a few weeks ago. Elizabeth did ny machine quilting course a few years ago and is quilting ALL of her stunning quilts now herself. What a deight and treat to have her quilts to show the students of the day that yes you can do it. Elizabeth is a regular student of the lovely and talented Karen Cunningham and is machine quilting her quilts with ease and classy style. After day 1 of a 2 day beginners machine quilting class, home she went and produced this fantastic extension table for day 2 . Did all the jig sawing , nailing etc all herself... WHAT HAVE I BEEN UP TO.

It was a new year promise to do more of this but what can I say !!!!!

I filmed a new DVD fpr quilters companion mag in january.

Its called an introduction to free motion quilting. Availabe in may 2010.

Scary stuff ,it was after a while, the voice settled and the fingers stopped shaking and I got on with it all.

The block of the month the mag is having is a beautiful quilt which will be auctioned for cystic fybrosis and after Michelle Marvig pieced it together I quilted it . Well that took 4 days. ( getting slower these days) i will post a picture after mag is out. ( cant spoil the surprise and legially I cant show it ) I made a small verrsion of the quilt where I free motion appliqued the centre block and quilted it . So its that second quilt that I am quilting on the DVD. Hope you enjoy it and I dont look too bad. Nice though to have hair and make up dome by a pro. Clare the editor makes you feel so relaxed.

And in December 2009 i rewrote all my class notes and have had them all printed up. So I was very productive in the holidays.

Then I set about starting this years show quilt.

Claire is 18 this june so I asked her what quilt she would like to mark the special birthday and she chose a vingae rose of sharon quilt. I have machine blanket stitched it colour on colour and then trapunto quilted in vintage designs. It took 3 days to mark and cut out the trapunto and so far a week to quilt it. Fingers crossed it turns out lovely for her. Its very classic. picture of it on the floor pinnedready to quilt.

I survived Quilt week Sydney... It was fantasic. On tuesday set up day, I helped Annette Gero set up her stand of 8 antique quilts, they were stunning. Shes a fasinating lady and so passionte about her history of quilt making in Australia. She was selling her new book The Fabric of Society and I had to but a coppy of course. Big book and lots of fasinating history of quilts, I will leave it till the school term 2 hoildays to sart reading I think.

Wednesday morning arrived early for presentations and I am really happy to get 4th in Anything goes catogory. The quilts were stunning so much domestic machine quilting, fantasic. My friend Katrina Hadjamicheal got 4 th for her beautiful applique quilt.

After all the excitement on to the Bernina stand, and working on the 820 machine. Had to rememer the threading again but after a few goes all a go and on to demonstrating. It is so much fun. I must thank all my friends and many students who came to say Hi and to encourage me it was lovely of you, You all made me so happy and not so scared.

The new820 machine is fast, big and beautiful . It was a dream to quilt with the space is fantasic.

I had a lovely dinner out Saturday night with Katrina, Micheel Marvick and Carolyn Price we went spanish , a beautufiuil seafood paella and a few wines to go woth it all. Lovely to catch up with these inspirational quilting friends.
