My dear friend Gina Burgess has given me permission to have a go at her technique of cutting out a feature picture fabric and free appliqueing it into a new story. Check out her web site www.ginaburgess.com.au for her quilts
Well a few months ago I was in Parkes teaching at Vanessa's wool and Craft like I do every year and came across this pretty fabric
|1.5 metres of fabric bought|
First I made a background of sqaures , sky and ground for the base. I used alot of my hand dyed fabric for the centre 1 inch finished strip method and inserted plain colours in between.
Made a tree trunk and then started to free motion appliqued all the edges first with monopoly clear thread, then with Mettler polysheen threads to match the colours appliqued the raw edges and sometimes inside the shapes.
Quilting was fun I wanted lots of texture so in the bottom was tear drops, baptist fans and pippis then pebbles behind the flowers, Continious curves in the pieced squares, and line work in the sky.
Lines and waves in the sky.
I used Wonderfill DECOBOB = 80 weight fine polyester which I LOVE ....... in the bobbin for quilting., bobbin fill in the bobbin for the applique , Deco bob again in the top for the quilting.
All of the quilting was sewn on my new Bernina 710 and wow it was fast and light AMAZING so happy with the machine .The extra space makes it so much easier and relaxed.... I took the top tension while free motion quilting with the fine threads to 2.0-1.5 and away we went.
Happy with it , different for me, was fun . Im trying to learn new technique to extend my self .... This will be a new inspiration ideas quilt for my regular students to make thier own picture quilt. Looking forward to their own versions with very different fabrics. Id like to make an oriental version soon.
Please leave a comment good or bad , Id love to know your thoughts
